Job Summary

This advanced level position provides technical guidance, develops, maintains and communicates effective health, safety and environmental programs, policies and procedures in order to safeguard employees, facilities and surrounding communities and to ensure compliance with government policy, regulations and practices.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supports the implementation of Health, Safety & Environmental Programs; including the development of programs, procedures and standards for compliance management
  • May act as a team lead for Health, Safety and Environmental tests and projects
  • Inspects or evaluates workplace environments, equipment or practices to ensure compliance with environmental, health and safety standards and government regulations
  • Investigates routine and unconventional accidents and complaints to determine the root cause, circumstances, contributing factors and corrective actions
  • Leads investigation of spills, releases, emissions or other environmental incidents; completes or verifies incident reports; and liaises with other environmental staff and environmental agencies to identify causes of these incidents and prevent recurrence
  • Develops recommendations and follow-up procedures to prevent accident recurrence
  • Conducts health, safety and environmental audits to assess field operations, buildings, facilities, tools and equipment
  • Collaborates with engineers, recommending measures to help protect workers from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, materials, potentially hazardous conditions or equipment
  • Prepares and submits environmental reports; maintains and analyzes environmental records
  • Develops training and educates the organization's workforce on environmental management & compliance to ensure that they understand and comply with the organization's environmental policies and standards
  • Mentors and trains less experienced HSE Representatives
  • Keeps abreast of environmental regulations so the organization's environmental management policies remain current and relevant
  • May represent Chesapeake in industry trade organizations
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job Specific Skills

  • Advanced knowledge of applicable health and safety theories and concepts and a working understanding of the operating procedures and practices, as well as, regulations of federal and state requirements
  • Advanced knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property and institutions
  • Advanced knowledge of environmental discipline and thorough understanding of the operation and structures of other disciplines, particularly oil and gas industry operations
  • Advanced knowledge of HSE laws, regulations, and standards (CCA,CWA,RCRA, CERCLA, OSHA, ESA, NEPA, NIOSH standards, API standards, et.)
  • Advanced knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and educational design, teaching and instructions for individuals and groups and the measurement of education effectiveness
  • Advanced technical competency in specific environmental media
  • Ability to use rigorous logic, critical thinking skills and methods to solve difficult problems with effective solutions
  • Ability to provide technical guidance on environmental programs to all levels of management


  • Minimum: High school diploma or GED
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree - from accredited university - Environmental Science, Health, Safety, Engineering, Law or related field
  • Preferred: Master’s degree - from accredited university - Environmental Science, Health, Safety, Engineering, Law or related field
  • Preferred: Other - QEP or position specific certification or license


  • Minimum: 5 - 8 years related work experience

Additional Qualifications

  • Ability to possess a valid driver's license
